AP Spanish - Cell Phone Debate 10/31

On Friday, our class will have a debate. You will discuss the problems and importance of cell phones in today's world.  I have schedule laptops for you to research this issue – please use your time and resources effectively! Next class, we will decide which position you will defend. Today I want you to research BOTH viewpoints. Remember: if you use statistics, please cite your sources! Work with a partner to complete each of the following:

A.  You should propose a change to the “status quo.” You will propose that there should be established and stringent limits or rules for the use of cell phones. This should be a statement in the form of a strategy, rule, or proposal.

Example: We propose that tourist excursions to the Galapagos Islands be prohibited in order to best preserve nature and the unique animals that live there. Moreover, we propose that strict laws are approved to restrict scientific studies to reduce the impact on the island.

B.  Your position will defend the unlimited usage of cell phones everywhere. You should propose that neither rules nor restrictions be imposed on the use of cell phones. This should be a statement in the form of a strategy, rule, or proposal.

Example: We propose that tourist excursions to the Galapagos Islands are NOT prohibited in order to better understand and teach the world about the importance of the island and its flora and fauna. Moreover, we propose that scientists continue to study and share their knowledge so that we may better care for the island.

*I specifically did NOT use an example of cell phones, please research and form your own ideas and opinions. These examples are meant to help you write and organize your arguments next class.

During the next class, you will prepare for next week’s debate. Each member of the group should have – at least – 10 points on which you will base your arguments. Remember - this is a debate, you won't necessarily know which points your opposition will choose. You should be prepared for a variety of arguments. Ex: Cell phones in schools, cell phones in cars, etc.
